It is a historic moment for the future of construction …

Under the name “Lausitz Art of Building”, Manfred Curbach’s team took part in the BMBF competition for a large-scale research centre as part of the structural change in Lusatia. Ultimately, however, the LAB was narrowly defeated by the German Centre for Astrophysics in September 2022.

Just as you can’t simply stop building to save resources, the initiators around Curbach couldn’t simply stop adhering to the need for a construction research centre. The declared aim was to establish the LAB as the key to climate-neutral and resource-efficient construction in Lusatia. And this goal is now within reach.

Living Art of Building

Following the decision of the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag on 17 November 2023, the partners involved provided information on 20 November 2023 in Bautzen on the establishment of the now renamed LAB – Living Art of Building. Construction without side effects.

Research

Our task is clear: construction must become climate-neutral and resource-efficient by 2045. However, there is currently a lack of both research and rapid implementation of new ideas.

Our mission

The mission of the LAB Living Art of Building is to realise the biggest paradigm shift in the construction industry to date: to transform the entire construction process and the use of the built environment into a climate- and resource-neutral, durable, variable, aesthetic and value-creating construction method.

There is an acute need for action

A significant intensification of research in the construction sector

is therefore one of the most important tasks for the future, both nationally and internationally, due to its enormous leverage effect.

Engineering

And this is not only meant in terms of design, but above all in terms of construction. So it’s not just about the art of construction, but about the art of engineering. The existing proofs of structural safety, fitness for purpose and durability must be supplemented by proof of climate compatibility.
